The Core Challenge
Conventional pre-workout nutrition advice — eat a meal or snack 60–90 minutes before training — assumes a normal appetite and calorie intake. On GLP-1, that assumption often does not hold. Eating a full pre-workout meal may be genuinely difficult when appetite is suppressed, and training on an empty stomach with very low overall calorie intake creates a meaningfully different physiological environment than fasted training at normal calorie levels.
Pre-Workout Nutrition on GLP-1
Even if a full meal is not possible before training, a small amount of protein and easily digestible carbohydrate in the 60–90 minutes before exercise can meaningfully support performance and reduce muscle breakdown. Good pre-workout options include a small Greek yogurt with a piece of fruit, a half protein shake, a hard-boiled egg with a small amount of crackers, or a banana with a tablespoon of nut butter.
Post-Workout Nutrition
The post-workout window — approximately 30–60 minutes after training — is when muscle protein synthesis is most elevated and protein consumption has the greatest impact on recovery and muscle preservation. Even if appetite is very low, prioritizing a protein-rich food or shake after training is one of the highest-return nutritional investments you can make on GLP-1. A protein shake, cottage cheese, or Greek yogurt are all easy-to-consume options when solid food does not appeal.
Injection Day Considerations
Many GLP-1 users notice that nausea is highest in the 24–48 hours after their weekly injection. Planning lower-intensity workouts on injection days — or scheduling your injection on a rest day — can reduce the experience of training through peak nausea. Experiment with different injection timings to find the approach that minimizes interference with your training routine.
Hydration Around Training
Hydration before, during, and after exercise is especially important on GLP-1, where overall fluid intake may already be lower than ideal. Drinking 16–20 ounces of water in the two hours before training and sipping water throughout the session is a practical baseline. Adding a small amount of electrolytes to post-workout hydration helps replace what is lost through sweat.
