The New Priority: Quality Over Quantity
When your appetite is suppressed by a GLP-1 medication, the calculus of eating fundamentally changes. You are no longer trying to resist eating too much — you are trying to ensure you eat enough of the right things. Every meal needs to work harder because you are fitting significantly more nutritional work into significantly fewer calories.
The Foundation: Protein First
Protein should be the anchor of every meal on GLP-1. It is the most critical nutrient for preserving lean muscle mass during weight loss and the most satiating macronutrient. Aim for 25–35 grams of protein per meal, or approximately 0.7–1.0 grams per pound of body weight per day.
- Chicken breast, turkey, and lean beef
- Fish and seafood — especially salmon, tuna, and shrimp
- Eggs and egg whites
- Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and low-fat dairy
- Legumes — lentils, chickpeas, black beans
- Tofu, tempeh, and edamame
Non-Starchy Vegetables
Vegetables provide fiber, micronutrients, and volume without contributing significantly to calorie load. They support gut health, help manage constipation (a common GLP-1 side effect), and slow glucose absorption. Aim to fill at least half your plate with non-starchy vegetables at every meal.
Complex Carbohydrates in Moderation
Carbohydrates are not the enemy on GLP-1 — but type and timing matter. Complex carbohydrates like sweet potatoes, oats, quinoa, and whole grains provide sustained energy and fiber. Simple carbohydrates and processed foods can worsen nausea and contribute to blood sugar instability. When appetite is limited, prioritize the carbohydrates that provide the most nutritional return.
Healthy Fats
Fats are calorie-dense, which matters more when you are eating less. Focus on unsaturated fats from avocado, olive oil, nuts, and fatty fish. Limit fried foods and high-fat processed foods, which slow gastric emptying further and can intensify nausea.
ShedPilot generates a personalized daily meal plan built specifically around your appetite level, dietary preferences, GLP-1 status, and protein targets — making it easy to eat right even on the days when food is the last thing on your mind.
