GLP-1 Medications

Trulicity (Dulaglutide)

Trulicity was among the first once-weekly GLP-1 medications and built a strong track record in cardiovascular outcomes research. Here is what makes it distinctive and who it might be right for.

What Is Trulicity?

Trulicity is the brand name for dulaglutide, a once-weekly GLP-1 receptor agonist manufactured by Eli Lilly. It was FDA-approved in September 2014 for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. In 2020, it received an additional approval for reducing cardiovascular risk in adults with Type 2 diabetes who have established cardiovascular disease or multiple cardiovascular risk factors.

The REWIND Trial

The REWIND trial enrolled nearly 10,000 participants with Type 2 diabetes and a broad range of cardiovascular risk profiles — including many without prior heart disease, unlike some earlier GLP-1 cardiovascular trials. Results showed dulaglutide reduced major adverse cardiovascular events by 12% compared to placebo, supporting its use across a wide range of patients.

The Auto-Injector Advantage

Trulicity is known for its single-use auto-injector pen design, which many patients find easier to use than traditional syringes. The needle is hidden and automatically retracts after injection, and the device requires no mixing or preparation. For patients anxious about injections, Trulicity's design has been a meaningful factor in adoption and adherence.

Efficacy for Weight Loss

Dulaglutide produces modest weight loss — typically two to three kilograms (four to seven pounds) on average, with some patients losing more depending on dose and lifestyle factors. It is generally considered less potent than semaglutide or tirzepatide for weight loss, but remains an effective and well-tolerated option for blood sugar management with cardiovascular benefits.
