What Is BPC-157?
BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) is a synthetic peptide derived from a protective protein found naturally in gastric juice. Research on BPC-157 has focused primarily on its potential for accelerating healing of tendons, ligaments, muscle, bone, and the gastrointestinal tract. The "body protection compound" name reflects its origin as a stomach-protective molecule.
Potential Effects Based on Animal Research
Gastrointestinal Healing
Animal studies have shown BPC-157 to accelerate healing of gastric ulcers, intestinal anastomoses, and inflammatory bowel conditions. This is particularly relevant for GLP-1 users who experience significant gastrointestinal side effects — some people use BPC-157 specifically to support gut healing and reduce GI discomfort during the early weeks of GLP-1 treatment. The mechanistic basis is BPC-157's apparent ability to promote angiogenesis in healing tissue and upregulate growth factor signaling.
Tendon and Ligament Repair
Studies in rodents have consistently shown accelerated healing of severed tendons and ligaments with BPC-157 administration. This has made it popular among athletes and people with chronic musculoskeletal injuries, particularly those who want to maintain activity during GLP-1 treatment.
Muscle Healing
Animal studies suggest BPC-157 may accelerate recovery from muscle tears and crush injuries, with some evidence of effects on muscle fiber regeneration — particularly relevant for people on GLP-1 who are doing resistance training to preserve lean mass.
July 2026 FDA Regulatory Update
FDA Advisory Committee Vote — July 23–24, 2026: In a significant development this week, the FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee (PCAC) voted to recommend that BPC-157 be added to the Section 503A Bulk Drug Substances List — the federal list of ingredients that state-licensed compounding pharmacies may prepare for patients with a valid prescription. The vote passed narrowly (approximately 8–6) and went against the FDA's own scientific staff recommendation. Important caveat: This is an advisory recommendation only. It is not binding on the FDA. The agency must still conduct a formal rulemaking process, expected to take six to twelve months at minimum — meaning BPC-157 remains not legal to compound or purchase for human use until the FDA finalizes a rule, expected no earlier than 2027. Nothing has changed about its legal status today. The vote is, however, a meaningful step toward potential future legalization through licensed compounding pharmacies.
Administration
BPC-157 is most commonly administered as a subcutaneous injection, though oral forms are also available. The oral route may be preferentially active for gastrointestinal applications given its resistance to acid degradation. Typical research doses range from 200–500 micrograms per day, though dosing is not standardized.
Safety Profile
BPC-157 has a notably clean safety profile in animal studies — significant research has not identified meaningful toxic effects even at high doses. No human clinical trials have been completed to formally establish safety and dosing in humans. The absence of reported serious adverse effects in animal research is encouraging but does not substitute for human clinical data.
